Christopher Nolan's blockbuster adaptation of The Odyssey isn't the only adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic that's coming in 2026. Godzilla will tackle the legendary story as part of his 'Monsterpiece Theatre' in a special new comic story.
Per ComicsBeat, IDW Publishing announced that the second installment of its latest Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theatre Presents series will be Godzilla's The Odyssey. The story will be written by Frank Tieri with art by Ilias Kyriazis, reimagining Homer's epic with Poseidon "unleashing Toho's more evil kaiju to thwart Odysseus's long voyage home" with Zeus sending along Godzilla to help him out in return. The issue will be released on June 10.
Godzilla Takes Over Homer's Epic in New Odyssey Reimagining
Newly unveiled cover art for the issue shows Godzilla right at home among the Greek gods. Preview pages (without dialogue) also tease a kaiju-level threat and the ensuing battle taking place — complete with what appears to be a cleverly redesigned Trojan Horse in the kaiju monster's image.
"The Odyssey is, hands down, one of the greatest stories ever told in history," Tierei stated in the press release announcing Godzilla's Odyssey. "I mean, it has everything… the Trojan War, vicious sea monsters, angry gods, enchanting sirens, devious witches, a cyclops with vision problems, etc. But there is one thing clearly missing… and that’s Godzilla. After all, Godzilla makes every story better, even this one, am I right?"
Fans will be able to spot several other legendary characters from the Godzilla universe, too. Tieri revealed that "part of the fun of this book was jamming as many familiar faces from the Godzilla-Verse in there, so plan on seeing Rodan, Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Destoroyah, and plenty of others you won’t see coming."
Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey is likely to be the much more historically accurate one, though — something that Tierei even admitted. "Toss out everything you know about Greek history and come join us on our GODyssey, if you will. Trust me… you won’t be sorry. (Though Odysseus might be, granted.)"
The New Monsterpiece Theatre Begins with Romeo & Juliet & Godzilla
Image via IDW PublishingGodzilla's The Odyssey is actually the second part in the four-part Monsterpiece Theatre Presents line-up, which is set to begin with Adam Tierney and Sean Peacock's Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, which goes on sale April 8. As the name suggests, that story reimagines Shakespeare's famous tragedy on an epic scale, complete with a large-scale rampage through Verona.
After Godzilla's The Odyssey hits comic book shops on June 10, Christopher Nolan's adaptation will follow a little more than a month later on July 17. The highly anticipated blockbuster film will star Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope, joined by an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, among others.
Godzilla's The Odyssey will be released on June 10 by IDW Publishing.
