In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Supergirl" director Craig Gillespie outlined his ambitious and deeply character-focused vision for Kara Zor-El's story. Speaking with the outlet, Gillespie confirmed that the film will extensively explore Krypton - particularly Argo City - offering audiences a rare and immersive look at the world that shaped Supergirl before its destruction. The director emphasized that these sequences are not merely visual spectacle, but essential to understanding the heroine’s emotional foundation and psychological complexity. "It's so fundamental to who she is as a person and what she goes through in her formative years there," Gillespie said, underscoring how Kara’s early experiences directly inform her personality and internal struggles. 

The Entertainment Weekly feature also revealed new casting details and creative elements that reinforce the film's expansive scope. David Krumholtz will portray Kara's father, Zor-El, alongside Emily Beecham as her mother, Alura In-Ze, bringing a previously underexplored Kryptonian family dynamic to the forefront. According to Gillespie, Krypton will be depicted as an intellectually advanced and culturally rich society, with Argo serving as a key setting that helps define Kara's upbringing. The production further distinguishes itself through its use of multiple languages - including a fully realized Kryptonian language - and its depiction of a vast interstellar journey spanning numerous planets, adding layers of authenticity and scale to the narrative. 

Starring Milly Alcock in the title role, Supergirl is inspired in part by the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow storyline and follows Kara on a galaxy-spanning mission alongside a young companion, Ruthye, as they pursue justice against a formidable enemy. The film blends elements of revenge-driven storytelling with large-scale science fiction, incorporating influences that range from grounded western narratives to visually dynamic space epics. Supporting cast members include Matthias Schoenaerts as the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills and Jason Momoa as the fan-favorite antihero Lobo, further expanding the film’s tonal range and audience appeal. 

Positioned as a key installment in the evolving DC Universe, Supergirl aims to present a more complex and emotionally layered interpretation of the iconic character - one shaped by trauma, loss, and resilience. Unlike her cousin Superman, Kara is portrayed as having directly witnessed the destruction of Krypton and the loss of her people, an experience that informs a more hardened and conflicted worldview. With its combination of intimate character development and expansive world-building, Gillespie’s vision - spotlighted through his Entertainment Weekly interview - signals a bold new direction for DC Studios' cinematic storytelling. The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on June 26, 2026.
