Few actors in Hollywood get the chance to return from the dead in their franchises, but Robert Patrick has managed it twice. The Terminator 2 and Peacemaker star saw his character, Auggie Smith, killed off in Season 1 of James Gunn’s DC series. Yet he came back for Season 2 as a different version of the same man, showing that his time in the DC Universe may not be over. Patrick said he is open to returning again if the opportunity comes up.
Patrick has kept busy since his most famous role as the T-1000 opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger. He appeared in multiple seasons of The X-Files and has worked recently in popular streaming hits like Reacher on Prime Video and 1923 and Tulsa King on Paramount+. But his part in James Gunn’s growing DC world feels like a special project to him, even with his character’s second on-screen death.
He recently told ScreenRant, “I’m at a stage of my career right now where I’ve got the good fortune of working with some very, very talented people. I’ve done two shows now with Taylor Sheridan, 1923 and Tulsa King. He’s certainly got a lot of projects out there. James is going to have a lot of projects out there. I’m a gun for hire, man, so if the suit fits, I’ll wear it. I’m ready to go.”
Patrick also admitted that he had no idea he would be appearing again in Season 2 of Peacemaker. That discovery came by chance, during an ordinary day out walking his dogs.
“I didn’t even know I was coming back for Season 2 of Peacemaker, until I ran into Steve Agee when I was walking my dogs up in the hills up here. I ran into him, and he said, ‘You know you’re coming back for Season 2?’ And I said, ‘No, I had no idea. How’s that possible?’ And he told me, and I went, ‘Wow!’ So, s–t, I would welcome the opportunity.”
The actor said it was refreshing to take on a new version of his own role, describing Gunn’s directing approach as one that encourages creativity and trust.

“For me, as an actor, to take ostensibly the same character and do a good version of him, what a unique perspective and way to handle it. There’s a lot of people I’ve worked with over the years, and directors, and there’s very few that are like James Gunn. He’s up there with my all-time favorite guys, because he creates such a comfortable, creative environment that allows for a real collaboration between actors and their director.”
Right now, there are no official plans for Peacemaker to return for a third season, even after the second season ended with an unresolved cliffhanger. That does not mean fans have seen the last of its characters. With Gunn’s new era for DC films and shows underway, it is possible Patrick’s Auggie Smith could appear again, or perhaps he could take on an entirely new role, just as actor Michael Rooker has done across several Gunn projects.
For Patrick, the door to the DC Universe appears to remain open. Whether he steps through again will depend on where Gunn takes his expanding comic book world next.
