Sal Buscema, one of the most prolific and respected artists in comic book history, passed away on January 23, 2026, at the age of 89. Born Silvio Buscema in Brooklyn in 1936, he devoted more than five decades to the comic book industry, becoming synonymous with dependable craftsmanship, strong visual storytelling, and an unwavering commitment to the medium. His work helped define the look and rhythm of American superhero comics during some of their most formative decades.
Buscema's career is most closely associated with Marvel Comics, where he was a cornerstone artist from the late 1960s through the 1990s. He produced celebrated long runs on The Incredible Hulk and The Spectacular Spider-Man, along with major contributions to Captain America, Thor, The Defenders, and many other titles. Known for his dynamic action, expressive figures, and clear panel-to-panel storytelling, Buscema earned the trust of editors and writers alike as an artist capable of carrying flagship characters on a monthly basis.
In the later stages of his career, Buscema brought that same experience and storytelling discipline to DC Comics, where his work on Superman-related titles became a notable part of his legacy.
