The following contains spoilers for Supernatural #4, on sale this week from Dynamite Entertainment
Dynamite's red-hot Supernatural series has been expanding the mythology of the Supernatural universe in a big way every month now, and the adventure continues in this week's Supernatural #4. As we noted in our review of the previous issue, the series has mostly been doing "done in one" issues that mimic the early "Monster of the Week" structure of the original Supernatural TV series, especially in Season 1 (when this comic book is set).
However, the end of Supernatural #3 had a cliffhanger where Dean and Sam found themselves trapped in the car that they've been using as a temporary replacement for their iconic Impala, and so this issue will be a rare two-part adventure, while, of course, still introducing a brand-new "Monster of Week," as you'll see in this preview.

READING IS DETRIMENTAL — I MEAN, FUNDAMENTAL! The denouement of last issue’s adventure in the woods leads the Winchester Brothers to the local library, which turns out to be more haunted than a graveyard built on top of another graveyard. But after some back-and-forth with the screaming spirits, Sam and Dean are able to ascertain that they’re all mostly harmless, and are really just interested in a quiet afterlife among the stacks. In fact, a quiet library with plenty to read and no one to bother him sounds almost like paradise to Sam — and if Dean’s not careful, he might end up losing his brother forever to the endless shelves between here and the hereafter! Head librarians GREG PAK and EDER MESSIAS man the circulation desk in Supernatural #4 — featuring one-of-a-kind bookplates by MESSIAS, CLAYTON CRAIN, ANDREA BROCCARDO, and a special cast PHOTO cover!
In the preview pages, we get the classic "Monster of the Week" introduction setup that Greg Pak has adapted so well during this series to this point. A young cancer patient is trying to forget her health problems by diving into a good book. However, the library is closing, but a librarian makes her a peculiar offer.
She tells the young woman that she can possibly ALWAYS remain reading, which the cancer-stricken woman responds well to, but we, of course, know that this is a demonic offer (if we DIDN'T know that already, we know by the art showing the librarian as a demon). The woman is then found dead in the aisle, and we discover that this is a regular occurrence at this library!
Meanwhile, we see the cliffhanger from last issue paid off, as Sam and Dean are trapped in their car, and it's going 70 MPH with the doors locked. Sam, though, figures out that the car could just crash them if it wanted to kill them, and he thinks that the car actually wants to guide them to problems, and Dean isn't so sure that it isn't keeping them alive just to use them for something that involves them being alive for now (like turning them into werewolves or draining their blood for a spell).
To find out which brother is correct, you'll have to pick up a copy of Supernatural #4 tomorrow!
