Russell Crowe has voiced strong criticism of Gladiator 2, the 2024 sequel directed by Ridley Scott. Crowe, who played the Roman general Maximus in the original 2000 film, did not return for the sequel because his character had died at the end of the first story. His recent comments have drawn attention from fans who still associate him closely with the series.
The Playlist recently reported that Crowe said those behind the sequel failed to capture what made the first Gladiator successful. He argued that its power came from its moral foundation, not from its large-scale violence or visual style. “I think the recent sequel that, you know, we don’t have to name out loud [referring to ‘Gladiator 2’], is a really unfortunate example of even the people in that engine room not actually understanding what made the first one special,” Crowe said. “It wasn’t the pomp. It wasn’t the circumstance. It wasn’t the action. It was the moral core.”
The original Gladiator was released in 2000 and became one of the decade’s biggest studio successes. It won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. The film followed Maximus, a Roman general who is betrayed, enslaved, and forced to fight in the arena, seeking vengeance for the murder of his family. The film earned over $460 million worldwide and is still regarded as one of the defining historical dramas of modern cinema.

In the new film, actor Paul Mescal played Lucius, revealed to be Maximus’s son. Crowe questioned that choice, saying the connection between Maximus and Lucius’s mother, Lucilla, “makes no sense to me.” He expanded on how he tried to preserve his character’s integrity while filming the original: “The thing is, there was a daily fight on that set. It was a daily fight to keep that moral core of the character,” he said. “The amount of times they suggested sex scenes and stuff like that for Maximus, it’s like you’re taking away his power. So you’re saying at the same time he had this relationship with his wife, he was f***ing this other girl? What are you talking about? It’s crazy.”
Crowe’s remarks reflect broader frustration with sequels that revisit old franchises but risk changing the tone or values that made them resonate. Many longtime fans of the original movie expressed similar complaints online, arguing that the new film offered spectacle over substance.

Gladiator 2 opened in November 2024 and grossed about $615 million worldwide on a reported $310 million budget. The cost made it one of the most expensive productions in Paramount’s history. Critics were split, giving the film a 63 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it a score closer to 70 percent. Reviewers praised the visuals and performances but said the story lacked emotional weight. Variety described it as “a grand but empty echo of a far better film,” while the Hollywood Reporter called it “ambitious but overstuffed.”
Despite mixed reviews, the film’s performance has encouraged early talks for a potential Gladiator 3. That project would reportedly continue Lucius’s story, although no director or script has been finalized. Crowe has not commented further on the possibility of another sequel, but his perspective continues to influence how fans view the direction of the franchise.
