Sony Just Doubled Down on Ending Physical PlayStation Games

Sony continues to disregard public fan backlash to its decision to end physical media by adding a noticeable warning label on PS5 consoles. The warning label reads: IMPORTANT NOTICE: From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console. There was no additional notice that the disk-focused console was being discounted since Sony would no longer produce actual disks for the system in 2028. According to an IGN interview, Sony CFO Lin Tao said they were cautiously moving forward with the plan to end physical media. She says: “There are various reasons we made this decision. The biggest being that the digitalization of contents overall has been progressing. That’s the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of contents, digitalization is progressing. “And so when we think about the future — and we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.
