The 95-year-old actor revealed he battled Stage 4 melanoma around the same time his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, was fighting Stage 4 breast cancer. In an interview with People, the father and daughter shared details about their diagnoses and recovery. Shatner said his daughter first discovered a lump in 2022 at age 60. Doctors later confirmed it was advanced breast cancer that had spread beyond the breast. About a year later, Shatner received his own diagnosis. “I went to an oncologist, and they operated almost immediately with Stage 4 melanoma,” he said.
