Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series Adds Key Asgardian Role

Amazon MGM Studios is expanding the cast of its upcoming God of War series with the addition of Max Parker, who will play Heimdall in Season 1. The British actor joins Ryan Hurst, previously announced as Kratos, in the adaptation of the acclaimed PlayStation franchise. Heimdall, known as the Watchman of Asgard and son of Odin, is portrayed as a perceptive god eager to prove his worth. Parker is best recognized for his role in the Netflix drama Boots, which aired for one season in 2025.

The latest casting update comes after Sony Pictures Television and Amazon formally introduced Hurst as the lead. Hurst earned recognition as Opie in Sons of Anarchy and as Beta in The Walking Dead. He also appeared in Saving Private Ryan and Remember the Titans and will star in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey. Hurst’s connection to the franchise runs deep—he voiced Thor in the 2022 video game God of War: Ragnarok. The game’s long-running protagonist, Kratos, has previously been voiced by Terrence C. Carson and Christopher Judge.

Production momentum continues behind the camera. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, known for Shōgun, Fallout, and The Boys, is set to direct the first two episodes. Ronald D. Moore, the veteran writer and producer behind Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Industry analysts point to the collaboration as one of Amazon’s most ambitious gaming-to-TV adaptations to date.

According to studio details, God of War will follow Kratos and his son Atreus on a personal journey to fulfill a family promise by spreading the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. The story highlights their struggle to understand each other as gods and as family. The series draws from the 2018 game that redefined the franchise originally launched in 2005. The live-action version will continue that emotional thread while exploring the moral weight behind Kratos’ violent past.

God of War was once planned as a theatrical film but was converted into a television series in 2022 as part of PlayStation Studios’ streaming expansion. Ronald D. Moore joined in late 2024 after original showrunners Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, and Rafe Judkins departed amid creative differences with Prime Video. The show received a two-season order, though production has not yet started. A release window has not been announced, but with recent casting progress, Amazon’s adaptation appears ready to move forward. Analysts say the trend of major game franchises shifting to television is far from over.
