The hit sci-fi film Project Hail Mary is expanding into mixed reality, letting players experience a new story inside Ryland Grace’s mission to save humanity. The upcoming VR title, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, will put players in the role of Grace in what developers call a major new “untold chapter” of the bestselling story.
The project comes from Maze Theory, the studio behind several immersive games, and it is scheduled for release on major MR and VR platforms in late 2026. The experience will let players explore Grace’s ship, fix failing systems, and communicate with the fan-favorite alien Rocky as they try to keep the mission alive.
The original film, starring Ryan Gosling, became one of the year’s biggest box office successes. Based on Andy Weir’s novel, Project Hail Mary follows a scientist who wakes alone on a spacecraft headed toward the Tau Ceti system. Along the way, he meets Rocky, an alien engineer attempting to save his own world from the same deadly threat.

Now, Weir is taking the story even deeper. “Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more,” Weir said in a new announcement video. “This is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie that you can experience in mixed reality.”
Fans will not only get to pilot the ship but also interact with its environment through hand gestures and onboard equipment. The game is designed to be both scientific and emotional, further connecting players to the human-alien friendship that made the story a cultural hit. The expansion into gaming marks a growing trend of Hollywood properties moving into interactive worlds, where audience investment is turning from passive viewing into active participation.
With Project Hail Mary continuing to dominate theaters and Maze Theory steering this adaptation, many see it as another sign that big tech and entertainment are merging faster than ever—and that the future of storytelling might be something people can quite literally step into.
