“The Conquering Crown – Part 01: The Implausible General”
The lands of Aquilonia continue to deteriorate under the maniacal leadership of King Numedides. While Count Trocero of Poitain attempts to strengthen ties with Tarantia, to the west, King Ferdrugo De Ramiro III of Zingara plots to overthrow the mad king. If Poitain does not ally with Zingara to overthrow King Numedides, then Poitain must be annexed.
Six days later, the capital city of Culario is besieged by the Zingarian army. Word reaches Aquilonia and its leaders, but King Numedides, ravaged by some dark force, refuses to lend proper military aid to his allies. The only help Poitain will receive is a company of ragtag mercenaries known more for their conquests with drink and tavern whores. War has come for the Westermarck Wolves.
What strange sickness has infected the mind of King Numedides? Will Conan and his band of mercenaries survive a sustained onslaught of Zingarian forces? Has King Ferdrugo De Ramiro III crossed a river too far? Collect the series to find out!
“Zingara: Land Of Chivalry And Treachery”
As part one of Jim Zub’s story arc concludes with a Poitain victory, Jeffrey Shanks picks up the trail with an in-depth history of Zingara. The lands west of Aquilonia were rich in both resources and human spirit. Zingara was a vessel on which Robert E Howard could express ideas foreign to the brutish Picts and Cimmerian people.
In this issue of Conan the Barbarian, Jeffrey Shanks exposes the mannerisms and beliefs of the Zingarians. If you wish to learn about the chivalrous men and women of Kordovia, this is the article for you.
Review
I have been a fan of the Conan character for many years, but I must be honest; I do favor the younger version of the barbarian over the troubled king he would become. Unfortunately, for fans like me, writer Jim Zub appears to be steering us one-step closer to the age of King Conan. Don’t get me wrong, to be King of Aquilonia is preferable to death or obscurity, I just find his younger years more diverse and interesting.
The main storyline continues to inspire, leaving readers with an emotional high. The main question is if Titan Comics can continue the quality of their Conan the Barbarian series. Let’s hope so. I give this issue five out of five stars.
