Does Daredevil truly understand what he did when he jumped in front of Bullseye's bullet intended for Mayor Kingpin Wilson Fisk in Season 1 of Marvel's Daredevil: Born. Again? By not allowing Benjamin Leonard "Dex" Poindexter his revenge, a domino effect was set into place that has resulted in the bloody unleashing of Bullseye in Season 2, Episode 4 but, possibly more dangerous than that is the fact Fisk now has a heightened sense of urgency to execute his master plan.
And, as it turns out, anyone thinking Fisk's plan is to take down Daredevil to claim the soul of New York City might be thinking too small. Granted, he did tell Vanessa there's little to no interest in ever leaving NYC, but that doesn't mean he intends for his political influence to stop there — already thinking far bigger than the freeport and the now sunken Northern Star.
Dario Scardapane, Marvel's showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again, made it clear that, not unlike in the comics, Kingpin doesn't just want New York City.
Kingpin Wants More Than NYC, Daredevil
"I think Fisk is actually feeling, 'What are the limits of legitimate power?' You become the mayor, and, of course, he's got to reach just a little farther. At one point, he says, 'We need to have a global impact,'" Scardapane told CBR's Sean O'Connell in an exclusive interview.
Fisk's rise from criminal underlord to mayor of New York City does indeed hint at bigger aspirations for the power-hungry Kingpin, but to what end?
"I think that Fisk would be more powerful as a martyr, to answer the question directly," Scardapane explained. "Because I think he would feel constrained. Now, as president, he might not be constrained at all, so I don't know. ... He would end up Emperor Fisk, no matter what. He would end up emperor, for sure."
He continued: "I do feel like... I don't know, I'm like, this man, I think, just wants to consume New York. There's something to his relationship with New York. I think once he's loved by New York he could —well, he'll never be satisfied. But I don't feel that he has the need to be loved by America. He wants to be the local boy made good."
Kingpin vs. Daredevil and The Avengers??
Image via Disney+Hmm ... President Kingpin? Emperor Fisk? Oh my, the possibilities.
The thought of either is terrifyingly fun because it wouldn't just mean Daredevil, The Punisher and The Defenders would have their hands more than full but, at that level of the game, it would put Fisk in the crosshairs of the Avengers and the recently rebooted X-Men. There's simply no way for Fisk to begin to exude his power over the United States (and/or more) without running afoul of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
That would then see Fisk enlist the help of equally-powered supervillains for his cause, but that all comes tantalizingly close to a story Scardapane made it clear he doesn't want to tell in Daredevil: Born Again — though it sure would be wild if he ever let Kingpin take it this far.
Season 1 and Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again are currently streaming on Disney+.
