Patrik Walker is an Emmy Award–winning writer who covers all things Comics & Superheroes. His work can also be found at the Dallas Cowboys, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports, among other outlets. One of the most respected names in his field, he is also a diehard enthusiast of all things comics, anime, gaming and movies — thriving in spaces where discussions involving those or similar topics reign supreme.
Not every Daredevil story will be told by Marvel, at least not if the showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again, has his way. That doesn't mean there isn't plenty of meat still on that bone, though — the comic books serving as a literal library of both canon and non-canon arcs to pull from, and Charlie Cox, the actor that plays Matthew Murdock in the highly-rated Disney+ series for Marvel, is eyeing one arc in particular.
To be specific, it's Ed Brubaker's and Michael Lark's Devil In Cell Block D storyline, and Cox wants it for Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again.
Despite just the fourth episode of Season 2 having arrived on Disney+, it's full speed ahead for Murdock with Season 3 already well into the filming phase — images of The Defenders reunion having now leaked online — and Cox is really pushing for Devil in Cell Block D.
Charlie Cox Stakes Claim for 'Chilling' Arc in Daredevil: Born Again
But why exactly does that arc make Cox smirk so, well, devilishly?
"There’s a really cool moment—one of my favorite Daredevil moments— very chilling, where someone has petitioned for him to be moved out of protective custody within Rikers Island and to be moved into Gen-Pop," he told DiscussingFilm of the comic. "Of course, being moved into Gen-Pop is disastrous for someone like Matt Murdock because he’s put so many of these people away. His life is gonna be in real danger. He can no longer be protected.
He continued: "There’s a moment where I think he goes to the hearing, and Ben Urich describes the judge making the decision that Matt Murdock will return to Gen-Pop, regardless of whether he's Daredevil or not. And there's a bit where Urich describes the most chilling moment, is when he looks over at Matt Murdock and sees a slight hint of a smile on his face, almost as if he wants it."
That tracks for Murdock, particularly given his aura in both Netflix's Daredevil and Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again. There's the obvious trauma-fueled rage that conflicts with his morality, but there are also moments when the proverbial sh*t is about to hit the fan and Daredevil grins right before it sprays all over the room.
Two Surprise Returns In Daredevil: Born Again Season 3?
Image via Marvel Studios"I remember reading that [arc] for the first time and thinking, 'That’s really a great kind of nugget of where this character’s internal life is, and what his attitude is.' That’s great duplicity sometimes of a character like Matt," said Cox. "Most of the time they can behave in a way where they know what they’re trying to do [is the] right thing, but the pull in the direction of chaos, mania, and the violence is so present that, when the chips fall that way, there is. There’s enjoyment."
He went on to note something else that hints at a return of Frank Castle in Season 3: "Great cameo from Punisher in the Devil of Cell Block D. There's a clever ruse at the end where he pretends to use Murdock to break out. And then just a lot of very violent, very graphic — the riot is a joy to read."
As it stands, Castle is set to dance a bit with Tom Holland's webcrawler in Spider-Man: Brand New Day but, first, he'll get his special one-shot on Disney+ titled The Punisher: One Last Kill in April. There are no current reports of Castle returning to finish what he began in Season 1, and Ben Urich (portrayed by Vondie Curtis-Hall in Netflix's series) was killed by Kingpin, so would the Devil of Cell Block D be treated a flashback?
That much is unclear at the moment, but what's crystal-clear is what Cox has in mind for Season 3: more violence — hell, all the violence.
