Dark Reign: The Hood #1-5 (2009)

I’m going to start by admitting two things: First, this is not a great comic.  I’m not even sure it’s a particularly good one.  Second, I really enjoyed reading it.

The Hood is a crime boss in league with Norman Osborn, and his job seems basically to be to lead as many D-list villains into his crew as he can, and kill all the other ones.  There’s not much more than that going on here, but it’s a blast seeing so many characters that only real, long-term Marvel nerds know about.

The Hood fends off an assassination campaign by White Fang, who wants revenge for The Hood killing her husband (who was a police officer) and her ally Force.  That storyline is the main through-line here, but along the way he struggles with inner demons and Dormammu, fends off insurrections within his own organization, and kills lots of people.

To get help with his Dormammu issues, Hood seeks out Satana Hellstrom…

Who has frankly never looked hotter.

Hood is unable to shed his link to Dormammu, and has to try to keep secret the identify of his family, his girlfriend, and their infant daughter.

Nothing really changes as a result of this book, but like I said it’s a fun read–despite the obvious weaknesses: Not much story, it’s hard to care about any of these people because they’re all awful, etc.
