Deadpool: Suicide Kings #1-5 (2009)

1 week ago 6

Another Deadpool miniseries full of jokes (about half of them land right and half just feel stupid and forced) and mayhem.

Deadpool decides to enter Black Ops Magazine’s Mercenary of the Year contest to get the $200K prize money.  He kills the competition, wins, and gets a $1m offer as a result.

Of course it’s a trap.  He’s been set up by Tombstone (not clear to me why)–framed for a crime he didn’t commit–and Punisher comes after him.

Daredevil stops Punisher from killing Deadpool (as if he COULD kill Deadpool), leading to an uneasy alliance between the red-masked characters.  Then the most-famous red-masked hero joins the Deadpool/Daredevil team: Spider-Man.  They beat up Wrecking Crew.  On and on until the end where Deadpool gets laid by Outlaw.

It’s his reward for buying her a new bed (and apartment) after destroying her old one earlier in this series.

Not only is this by-the-numbers, but the whole premise of Deadpool being a hero because he’s been set up is just dumb.  Deadpool has recklessly murdered hundreds of people.  It’s kind of his brand.  He’s far from innocent.  Also, it doesn’t help that Marvel couldn’t keep a single artist across all five issues.

On the positive side it’s got the characters I like to read about and, as I said above, about half the jokes are funny, so … If you like Spidey, Punisher, etc. and are a fan of Mike Benson (I generally am), then it’s a fine diversion on a rainy afternoon.

Also, some of the covers pay tribute to more famous (and better) comics.
