I don’t hate Mark Millar, but I recognize that with his work the results vary tremendously. So far, I have emphatically NOT enjoyed his Fantastic Four run. I’ve found it to be a confusing and relentless grind through alternate realities and threats that are supposed to be existential but lack any emotional weight or tension.

This issue is a pause for Christmas. The team visits Reed’s extended family in a small Scottish town. Val and Franklin get jet packs for Christmas and are out playing with them in a forest when Val disappears–taken by a big monster.

She’s back by the end.
I think this is the first self-contained, “small” story in Millar’s run and it’s better than the rest of his stuff with this team. Still not great, though. Maybe Millar just doesn’t know how to write a more intimate, family-based team?
