This story arc begins in Thailand…

Where a Watcher is dead. He’s from another dimension, like so many of the threats from Mark Millar’s run.
In parallel, Doctor Doom returns to Latveria and is talking all about “The Master” coming.
Much of Millar’s run comes to a head here, as the Marquis of Dead is revealed as the Master of Doom, who taught young Earth 616 Victor Von Doom all he knew before leaving to go destroy entire universes. Millar creates a back-story for Victor Von Doom that is entirely unnecessary and barely consistent with Stan and Jack’s original vision of the character.
I know there are people who like this run. I don’t. The less said about it the better in my view, especially the big retcon of Marvel’s best villain. There are many good ideas here, starting with the dead Watcher at the start of the tale, but they never coalesce into a real story and the implications are, frankly, unacceptable for fans of Earth 616 canon.
But at least the Marquis is dead by the end. Also, Thing breaks up with his fiance, which is good, too, because we all know he belongs with Alicia.

She’s jilted in her wedding gown and still wants to be friends. Wow. Mark Millar clearly knows nothing about women.
Jonathan Hickman’s brilliant run comes next.
