He-Man’s “Modern” Makeover Has Fans Bracing for Impact

After decades of stops, starts, and false promises, Masters of the Universe is finally set to hit theaters in the summer of 2026. Actor Nicholas Galitzine is talking up the new take on He-Man, and so far, fans of the 1980s cartoon and toy line are wondering if they will actually get the faithful adaptation that’s been teased since Dolph Lundgren wore the harness back in 1987.

Early reactions claim the designs pay tribute to the classic animated series, but Galitzine’s recent comments suggest that this version may not be quite the blast from Eternia’s past that long-time fans hoped for. Speaking with ScreenRant, the actor dropped hints about the film’s modern spin on the character.

“Honestly, I knew when I got the script that it was very unlike the type of movies that kind of sit in its genre or bracket. There was something incredibly human about the story, and so humorous, which are two things that I really look for as an actor. Similar to this movie, [100 Nights of Hero], there was humor and also emotionality. There’s a little bit more action, I suppose, with He-Man. [Laughs] But I really am extremely excited for people to see this movie and to meet Adam.

“Without spoiling too much, I think there is a modernity to him that is really interesting. It feels like who he is as a person is a handshake between what traditional masculinity and femininity are, and I think it is very exciting to be able to play that in such a huge studio movie. Obviously, the action and the set pieces are incredible, but there’s a really human story in there as well. I think if I’m going to do something with that level of spectacle, I have to have that as well.”

Translation: Don’t expect your dad’s He-Man. If Galitzine’s idea of “modernity” includes blurring the old-school heroic edges, there’s a real chance this movie might not be the full-throttle power fantasy the 80s fans remember. Hollywood’s new habit of retooling masculine icons into social statements doesn’t exactly leave fans sleeping easy.

Reports from a recent test screening claim the film “really is made for the fans” but also aims to hook a younger audience who wouldn’t know Castle Grayskull from Hogwarts. That marketing line has been heard before, and it rarely ends with faithful storytelling. Still, excitement is building for the release of the first trailer, which is rumored to drop alongside big names like Avengers: Doomsday and Supergirl in theaters soon. The film joins a packed 2026 summer lineup that also includes Spider-Man: Brand New Day, meaning competition for attention will be fierce.

Masters of the Universe has survived a long stretch of development hell, jumping from studio to studio for more than ten years. The property remains a nostalgic goldmine for 80s kids, while also serving as an introduction for a new generation raised on reboots. That blend of audiences could help it land huge numbers at the box office, as long as the filmmakers remember why He-Man’s story mattered in the first place.

The cast list is stacked, with Galitzine leading alongside Jared Leto, Alison Brie, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Sam C. Wilson, Kojo Attah, Hafthor Bjornsson, Morena Baccarin, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, and Jon Xue Zhang. Masters of the Universe hits theaters on June 5, 2026. Whether it delivers the power—or just another lecture—remains to be seen.
