InvestiGators is an utterly delightful read. Created by cartoonist John Patrick Green, the graphic novel series follows Brash and Mango, two alligators who also happen to be top undercover spies. Each book in the series sees the pair undertake a variety of missions, uncovering mysteries and encountering plenty of lively characters along the way. It’s a whole lot of fun (and filled with truckloads of puns and meta self-awareness) while also having plenty of heart.
So, how do you read the InvestiGators graphic novel series? As you’ll soon discover, you don’t have to be a spy to uncover the secret. This InvestiGators guide highlights the best way to read all the books, along with other handy details such as spin-offs and different editions.
What age group is InvestiGators suitable for?
The InvestiGators graphic novel series is made for a middle-grade audience. The MacMillan website lists the series as suitable for ages 7-10, while Common Sense Media suggests ages 6 and over.
After reading the series, I would recommend it for those aged 7 and over. Much of this is due to the reading comprehension required and the heavy use of puns that may go over some younger readers’ heads.
Thematically, the series explores themes of guilt and tough choices throughout the earlier books, culminating in the fourth one. Some younger readers may find these a little distressing, as they result in some minor conflict between our heroes, and may benefit from an adult to help them discuss and unpack the events. These themes are resolved in a considered manner that helps characters grow.
Who publishes InvestiGators?
First Second (US) and MacMillan (UK) both publish the InvestiGators series in English. These are practically the same, with the tiny exception of a localisation. In the MacMillan edition, the currency denomination was changed to pounds. Otherwise, the comics are practically the same.

Do you need to read the InvestiGators in order?
While the InvestiGators graphic novels have self-contained elements, they’re best read in release order. This is due to plot-threads continuing from one book to the next. This is most evident in the state of villains, how readers learn about recurring characters over time, and how events from previous books are returned to.
However, don’t worry if you don’t have access to the books in order. Subsequent graphic novels in the series offer exposition to readers, explaining past events, recurring characters, and concepts. Sometimes these explanations will inform story threads, but, at the same time, there are plenty of self-contained elements and new ideas introduced to make them enjoyable to those who haven’t read previous titles.
As a result, if you don’t have access to every book in order, there will still be plenty to enjoy, especially for readers who don’t mind going with the flow. However, readers will get more out of it if they do.
