Creator Robert Kirkman recently hinted at where the story will be heading, just days after Season 4 debuted on March 18.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Kirkman talked about his thoughts on the series and how it has been introducing its own elements that aren't found in his original comics. "I think it's a great opportunity to be able to put something new in the show that's unique to the show," Kirkman teased. "Anyone familiar with the comic that's watching a TV show can still experience that new feeling and feel the surprise of something that you can't predict, and you have no idea how the story's going to go."
Invincible Season 4 Introduces an Exciting New Villain
Image via Amazon/MGM Studios / Courtesy Everett CollectionThe newly premiered season of Invincible introduces a new villain into the mix named Grand Regent Thragg, who fans of the franchise will recognize as one of the comics' main antagonists. The Viltrumite War intensifies as a result, but Invincible doesn't hesitate to differ slightly from its origins.
One of the biggest examples is Damien Darkblood, a character who fans saw briefly in Season 1 and is going on to have a much larger impact in Season 4. It's a major contrast to the character's role in the comics. To Kirkman, these changes — including larger ones that impact the story more directly — actually help to make the series better overall.
Fans can even anticipate it happening in future seasons. "We had a lot of fun with that storyline," Kirkman shared. "So it's something that we hope to be able to do more and more as time goes on."
He added: "Well, the real sweet spot is when you find out that it's an additive. I think that, thematically, that Darkblood story falling where it falls does a lot of work with Mark's character and sets up a lot of things about where he is and what his mindset is moving into the Viltrumite War."
Kirkman Insists Original Invincible Stories Improve the Series Overall
Image via Amazon/MGM Studios / Courtesy Everett CollectionIt remains to be seen just how far the new season of Invincible will end up deviating from its source material, but the series has long been praised for its faithfulness to Kirkman's original story. Fans shouldn't worry too much, though, with the creator teasing that these differences are actually useful to the core adventures that they already love.
"It's not so much a detour as it is actually a little bit of spice that's thrown on the story that really does kind of help it holds together and push you in some very useful directions story-wise," he shared. "So in adding more things like this and doing more new storylines, it's always about finding that little bit of the story that can accentuate what we already have and clarify what we already have and make it all work a little bit better."
The first three episodes of Invincible Season 4 are now streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes airing Wednesdays through April 22.
