One of Marvel Comics' biggest events is gearing up for a major return.

Per Marvel Comics' official press release, Civil War has been given a spin-off series that will explore one of the universe's most divisive showdowns. "In 2006, there was one question every comic fan asked themselves—WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?" Marvel questions when tee'ing up the introduction of Civil War: Unmasked.

"Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s CIVIL WAR, along with its gripping tie-in stories, tore your favorite superheroes apart, redefined event storytelling and unleashed shockwaves across the Marvel Universe that are still felt today. Now, twenty years later, Marvel is revealing secret showdowns and all-new adventures from the epic conflict in CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED, a five-issue limited series launching in May from writer Christos Gage (Battleworld), artist Edgar Salazar (The Last Wolverine), and returning original Civil Warcolorist Morry Hollowell," the comic book publisher continued.

Marvel explained that Civil War: Unmasked takes place before, after, and during the events of Civil War while setting the spotlight on untold stories that occur during the events of the original comic. Returning as a five-issue limited series, Civil War: Unmasked promises the return of standout characters such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Tigra, and Goliath.

What's Been Said About Civil War: Unmasked So Far

Civil War: Unmasked writer Gage explained, “In 2006, I was a rookie comic book writer when a short delay in the production of the epic Civil War event limited series led to me being offered the one-shot Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War. It was my first really high profile project at Marvel, a big hit, and 20 years later, they still haven't managed to get rid of me! So it's a thrill and an honor to revisit that troubled time with CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED, in which I have the privilege of joining with brilliant artist Edgar Salazar and trend-setting original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell to reveal never-before-told stories from that milestone event!”

Civil War served as a tremendous cultural event for Marvel Comics, pitting two of Marvel's most cherished heroes against one another. Fans were asked to take sides, swear allegiances, and explore moral conflicts that remind readers that comics thrive when ethics become ambiguous. Before Civil War: Unmasked reaches comic shelves and digital publication, Marvel fans can go back and relive the tension by reading the original comic series that was released in the early 2000s, or tune back in to Captain America: Civil War, which is available to stream on Disney+.

Civil War: Unmasked is available for pre-order and will release on May 5, 2026, wherever comics are sold.
