The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Man Noir #4, on sale January 7 from Marvel Comics.

Spider-Man Noir just met the most unhinged villain of his comic book career, and it isn't even close.

In a preview of Spider-Man Noir #4 (by Erik Larsen, Andrea Broccardo, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC's Joe Sabino) from Marvel Comics, readers find the titular hero preparing to take on the latest superpowered threat to his city — Cyrus Goop, aka the Ghost-Hunter. Of course, where Cyrus sees ghouls, there are only innocent civilians, leaving it up to Spider-Man to take the Ghost-Hunter down before he turns any unwitting locals into unfortunate poltergeists of their own.

The official solicit synopsis for Spider-Man Noir #4 from Marvel Comics reads, "GUNS & GHOSTS & GOONS — OH MY! Peter Parker is investigating a slew of dehydrated corpses popping up around town — much to Gwen Stacy's dismay! And as Peter gets closer to solving the mystery of her father's death, Gwen homes in on the identity of Spider-Man..."

Cyrus Goop is just the latest character to call the world of Earth-90214 their home. Although this particular corner of the Multiverse is best known as the home to Spider-Man Noir, it was first introduced just weeks before the black-and-white Wall-Crawler himself in 2008's X-Men Noir #1 by Fred Van Lente, Dennis Calero, and Nate Piekos.

The reality of Earth-90214 is home to all manner of iconic Marvel Comics heroes and villains as they would have been if they had emerged during the 1920s and 1930s rather than the (relatively) modern day. Though Earth-90214 is inhabited by the likes of its own X-Men, only a handful of characters wield any genuine superpowers or heightened abilities of their own, including Spider-Man, Black Cat, and Daredevil.

Rather than being imbued with incredible powers due to a radioactive spider bite, the Peter Parker of Earth-90214 received his uncanny abilities courtesy of an ancient spider-god. Also, unlike the primary version of the character, Spider-Man Noir has never had any real qualms with using lethal force against his enemies on the battlefield, even if he has been seen struggling with such actions after the fact.

Currently, fans of the character are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Spider-Noir live-action streaming series from Amazon, MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Set to premiere later this year, the series will see Nicolas Cage reprise the role of Spider-Noir's Peter Parker, which he voices for the Spider-Verse series of animated feature films.

Alongside Cage, Spider-Noir is set to star Lamorne Morris as Robbie Roberston, Brendan Gleeson as an unnamed New York City mob boss, Li Jun Li as a nightclub singer, and Abraham Popoola as a World War I veteran desperate for any opportunity he can find. The core cast of Spider-Noir is rounded out by Jack Huston, Lukas Haas, Karen Rodriguez, Cameron Britton, Whitney Rice, and Amanda Schull.
