Acclaimed artist and comic book creator Sara Pichelli opens up about the "saddest part" of her life. Miles Morales has gained massive popularity due to the Spider-Verse saga, yet his co-creator has been treated unfairly.
Per fan and industry news page Discussing Film on X, Miles Morales co-creator Sarah Pichelli recently noted that she does not receive any form of royalties from the various animated films, Insomniac video games, or merchandise related to the character. "I don't get anything... That's the saddest part of my life."
Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Miles Morales made his comic book debut in the pages of 2011's Ultimate Fallout #4. The second Spider-Man of the original Ultimate Universe (the reality of Earth-1610) after Peter Parker, Miles Morales' early days as a would-be hero were marred by his own specific brand of personal tragedy.
When the entire reality of Earth-1610 was destroyed due to a Multiversal Incursion, Miles and his family were lucky enough to find themselves transported to the primary Marvel Universe of Earth-616. There, Miles has continued on in his career as Spider-Man, arguably to greater effect than ever before, all while further cementing his place in the wider Marvel Comics mythos.
In the years since his debut, Miles Morales has been a key player in various Marvel Comics storylines, and continues to lead yet another one of his own self-titled series today. Miles has even been the subject of multiple titles outside the realm of comic books, ranging from Insomnia Games' hit Marvel's Spider-Man series to taking center stage in Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Amination's billion-dollar Spider-Verse series of animated feature films.
What's Next for Miles Morales on the Silver Screen?
Image via Sony Pictures AnimationCurrently, the Spider-Verse animated film trilogy is approaching its conclusion with the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The threequel will follow in the wake of the events of 2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which saw Miles Morales and various other Wall-Crawlers from across the Multiverse get caught up in an interdimensional conspiracy.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will feature the voices of returning stars Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld as Miles Morales and the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65. Alongside Moor and Steinfeld, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will also mark the return of fellow franchise voice stars Daniel Kaluuya as Hobie Brown, a.k.a. Spider-Punk, Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar, a.k.a Spider-Man India, Issa Rae as the Jessica Drew of Earth-332, a.k.a Spider-Woman, and Jason Schwartzman as Johnathon Ohnn, better known as The Spot.
Back in December 2024, Spider-Verse voice star Brian Tyree Henry, who previously portrayed Miles' father Jeffeerson Morales in the first two films, promised fans an extremely emotional if not outright devastating ending to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. "There's not going to be a dry eye in the house," Henry stated. "I'll tell you that. Good luck. It's not going to wrap up in a nice little bow what things do."
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently slated to swing into theaters on June 4, 2027.
