Monsterverse Saga Focused on King Kong Returns with New Story After 2-Year Absence

Patrik Walker is an Emmy Award–winning writer who covers all things Comics & Superheroes. His work can also be found at the Dallas Cowboys, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports, among other outlets. One of the most respected names in his field, he is also a diehard enthusiast of all things comics, anime, gaming and movies — thriving in spaces where discussions involving those or similar topics reign supreme.

All hail the King. OK, though that statement will probably rile up Godzilla fans (that's always fun, though), there's simply no denying the legend that is King Kong a.k.a. Kong, one of the most recognizable and celebrated monsters of all-time — alongside the rightfully honored thermonuclear Gojira. That said, the MonsterVerse can celebrate a new achievement for the one true king of the apes (sorry, Caesar).

One of the most celebrated projects in the history of the alpha primate is 2017's Kong: Skull Island, in any variation. The live-action version helped set the cinematic stage, along with 2014's Godzilla, in the MonsterVerse for Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and the long-awaited 1v1 blockbuster fight that was Godzilla vs. Kong (2021); and the animated version did some serious numbers for Netflix in 2023, garnering plenty of acclaim from critics and fans alike.

So when Titan Comics created a continuation of the successful eight-episode Netflix series, Skull Island, in the comic book realm in 2025, it did not disappoint, not in the very least. The beauty within the original and variant covers generate a promise that is delivered within the panels of Skull Island #1.

It's a return to action for Kong and his allies after a two-year hiatus, the Skull Island animated series having fueled fans back in 2023. The storyline/arc remains unchanged: castaways make their way to Skull Island and, in the process, find themselves on the same side of the tracks as Kong, in that they're all at war with some of the darkest secrets that lay hidden — and, at times, not so hidden at all — within the island itself.

Is Kong Strong Enough To Save Them All?

The answer to that question isn't as obvious as you might think. After all, Kong's battle with the Kraken isn't exactly a cakewalk, and he takes major damage in it, and is poisoned, to boot. But that's only the beginning of their worries, as Charlie then gets captured by Skull Islanders and questioned for his role in the fight between the Titans, but considering it was to save his own father — he makes it clear that, no, he does not regret it.

It all sets into motion a sequence of events that puts Charlie through a grueling test of his own character and survival instincts. He's suspended above a pit by the natives and told to survive for three days, if he can, only to eventually discover that the pit is likely an opening to none other than Hollow Earth itself. You can imagine where things go from there. Oh wait, no, you probably can't, so that means you should pick up Skull Island #1 and see for yourself how, and if, a poisoned Kong can find a way to save the day ... or if he even wants to at all.

Skull Island is currently streaming on Netflix, and Skull Island: #1 is available wherever books are sold.
