Nicholas Hoult tacitly confirms when the Man of Tomorrow is set to begin filming, and it is coming sooner than expected.
Speaking to Variety, Hoult noted that Man of Tomorrow "begins filming in April." The returning Superman star went on to state, "I can't say much about it, but it's awesome." Readers can check out a clip from the interview for themselves down below.
Hoult made his feature film debut as the Man of Steel's iconic nemesis Lex Luthor in Superman by writer-director James Gunn. The film introduced audiences to David Corenswet's Superman, alongside a whole host of new versions of classic DC Comics characters, including Lois Lane as portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, Jimmy Olsen as portrayed by Skyler Gisondo, and Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, who is already slated to lead her own self-titled feature film next year.
Upon its release in July, Superman absolutely dominated the box office, bringing in a whopping $616.7 million against a $225 budget. The film garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. As of the time of writing, Superman holds an 83% "Certified Fresh" rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across nearly 500 verified critical reviews of the film. Superman also boasts an even higher 90% rating via Rotten Tomatoes' audience-generated "Popcornmeter," as averaged across more than 25,000 user submitted reviews.
While Superman marked the DCU debuts of a whole host of superpowered heroes ranging from Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern, to Anthony Carrigan's Rex Mason, aka Metamorpho, returning writer-director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn has been quick to shut down baseless rumors regarding what characters might appear in the sequel. In response to the notion that Man of Tomorrow will feature Wonder Woman mainstay Steve Trevor, Gunn offered a simple "Nope."
Why One Seemingly Minor Character Could Mean Everything for Man of Tomorrow
Superman and Peacemaker star Frank Grillo, who portrays acting ARGUS director Rick Flag Sr., promised that the character "is a big part of the sequel's story" while discussing Man of Steel. "So I'm excited about that," Grillo added. Whereas this would otherwise be a fun tidbit about the film ahead of its release otherwise, the events of Peacemaker Season 2 coupled with Grillo's statement may have clued audiences in to exactly what kind of story Man of Steel will have to tell when it arrives.
During Peacemaker Season 2's finale, John Cena's titular antihero was thrust into the vast expanse of the alternate dimension known as Salvation as the first test subject in the grand experiment to turn it into a superhuman prison. Though Flag Sr. obviously did this to exact revenge against Peacemaker for killing his son in The Suicide Squad, it also opened the door for what could be a live-action adaptation of DC Comics' fan-favorite Salvation Run series.
If Grillo's Flag Sr. is indeed a major part of Man of Tomorrow, and his character is intent on continuing to use Salvation as a superhuman prison dimension, he could very well be gunning for Superman when the film arrives. At the same time, there could be a whole world of other heroes and villains to be set free when that time comes, which has only furhter fueled online speculation as to the film's story.
Man of Tomorrow is currently slated to soar into theaters on Jul. 9, 2027.
