Nova #19 (2009)

3 weeks ago 11

Last arc ended with the arrival of a new Nova Corps.  In this issue, Richard Rider becomes their leader and his brother, Robbie, becomes a Nova.  They take on the Serpent Society and Taboo, but it’s really just an excuse to introduce them all.  So let’s do that.

Malik is the brash youngster.

Irani is the veteran soldier.

Qubit is the synthetic organism who, I expect, will get storylines where he will want to be more human or, perhaps, where his “humanity” is more compassionate than the actual carbon-based organisms around him.

Fraktur is the unsexy female powerhouse who claims to be a cousin of Fin Fang Foom.

Finally, Morrow is going to be the guy who doesn’t follow orders.

Okay, okay.  Every time has a tank.  Every team has the “smart one,” the “brash” one, and the rebel…I get that.  But Abnett and Lanning have done so much good with the character of Nova and the Cosmic universe in general that I trust they’ll make good use of these characters.

During the story, Worldmind refuses to reinstall inside Richard Rider’s head and announces the need to rebuild a vast Nova Corps.  Richard tells Worldmind to stop–that there are too many members.  But in the final pages, Worldmind converts about two-dozen Earth people into Nova Corps members–including Robbie.

I’m digging this.  Looking forward to more.
