No, it is unfortunately not June yet. The hype and speculation surrounding DC Studios’ and James Gunn’s Supergirl movie is quickly approaching fever pitch, that much is certain, and Milly Alcock is all set to try and prove she is the rightful casting for the role of Superman’s less refined older cousin, Kara Zor-El.
The word following early screenings is that Alcock is indeed living up to Gunn’s incredible declaration that she is his “best bit of casting ever I've ever done in my entire life”, but time will tell; and the good news is DC Comics isn’t simply allowing the fate of Supergirl to rest in the cinematic version — preparing to reward her loyal comic book followers as well.

What Is DC's Summer of Supergirl?
I'm glad you asked, because it's really exciting stuff.
DC's Summer of Supergirl #1 is, as mentioned, a 48-page anthology with a cast of creators that'll make your beautiful mind spin. The one-shot is written by Sophie Campbell, Gail Simone and Mark Waid — all acclaimed in their own right — and artwork is delivered by Cian Tormey, Emma Kubert and Belén Ortega.
Here's a quick breakdown of all you need to know about the latest DC Comics' Supergirl project:
- Writers: Sophie Campbell, Gail Simone, Mark Waid
- Art: Cian Tormey, Emma Kubert, Belén Ortega
- Main cover: Belén Ortega
- Variant covers: Tula Lotay, Pablo Villalobos
- Supergirl movie variant: Mahmud Asrar
- On sale: June 24
- Price: $5.99 US ($6.99 US card stock variants)
Per DC Comics' release: "In the lead story by Sophie Campbell and Belén Ortega, the quiet town of Midvale is shaken when Supergirl comes face-to-face with the galactic bounty hunter Logo. Can the Maiden of Might stand up to the Main Man? DC's Summer of Supergirl Special also features two bonus stories — one by Mark Waid and Cian Tormey, and another by Gail Simone and Emma Kubert — each celebrating Supergirl as she resumes her rightful place as the Heir to El."
Why DC Comics Is Helping James Gunn's Supergirl Push
Credit: DC Studios via MovieStillsDBThe answer is exceedingly obvious, in that one hand will wash the other here.
It's no secret James Gunn and Warner Bros. are banking big on Alcock's viral cameo in David Corenswet's 2025 blockbuster Superman parlaying into a blockbuster of her very own, and seeing as it's just the second film in the Gunn and Peter Safran era for DC, a disappointing showing could be devastating for the already shaky future of the DCU (shaky due to a highly-publicized corporate buyout war).
With that in mind, it makes perfect sense DC Comics would lend a helping hand for Supergirl and Lobo, particularly given the fact that the success of Supergirl will immediately spike interest in the comic book realm for those who may be new to her arc, or her character in general (shame on you).
That means that it does indeed need to be the summer of Supergirl, and DC's Summer of Supergirl serves as a nice appetizer for the main course that'll land two days later — making for a high-flying June for the Kryptonian princess.
