Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

Comic book fans seem to be enjoying what DC Studios has been putting out under the leadership of James Gunn so far. However, one cannot help but notice that the marketing for its next major superhero flick, Supergirl, appears to pay homage to one of the filmmaker's previous hits.

On Dec. 10, 2025, the official Twitter (or X) account of Supergirl shared a link to a YouTube page counting down the online premiere of the DC movie's first trailer, which will be available to watch tomorrow. The post is accompanied by the image of a new poster, which sees star Milly Alcock in a pose that calls to mind Guardians of the Galaxy.

In the promotional image, the DC Universe iteration of Clark Kent's cousin, Kara Zor-El, is seen floating over a spray-painted House of El crest and wearing over her costume a trench coat last seen in her Superman cameo, sunglasses and, most notably, a pair of headphones around her neck. This listening device looks quite a bit like the ones used by Chris Pratt as Peter Quill in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Gunn teased the imminent arrival of the Supergirl trailer with another look at Alcock, as well as glimpses of the trailer itself.

Indeed, in Gunn's trilogy of cosmic Marvel Cinematic Universe installments, the ravager-turned-hero otherwise known as Star-Lord frequently plays the greatest pop hits of the '60s, '70s and '80s on his Walkman, which he listens to with the same old-fashioned pair of orange headphones. That was, however, until his sentient planet father, Ego (Kurt Russell), destroyed the Walkman in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, leading Quill to adopt a recovered Zune as his new "Awesome Mix."

Seeing the same brand of headphones as Star-Lord wrapped around the neck of Milly Alcock's Supergirl is likely not a coincidence. Not to mention, it also sparks curiosity over what the Kryptonian's own "Awesome Mix" will sound like in her upcoming movie from director Craig Gillespie and adapted from Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by screenwriter Ana Nogueira.

The Importance Of Music In James Gunn's Comic Book Adaptations

It is no secret among fans of James Gunn's work that music plays a major role in his creative process. That is especially evident in his releases that are inspired by comic books.

The Grammy-nominated soundtracks for the aforementioned Guardians of the Galaxy movies are easily the most notable and iconic examples of this, and not just for the way they wonderfully set up the films' humorous tone. For instance, in the 2014 original hit, Peter Quill has a very close connection to his Walkman and the "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" cassette tape inside — featuring the likes of Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love" and "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Suede — because his mother made it for him before she passed away of cancer.

Every episode of Peacemaker, which was created by Gunn in 2022, has its own memorable musical moment at the top of every episode in the form of the glorious dance number that serves as its opening credits sequence. Season 1's intro was set to "Do Ya Wanna Taste It" by Wig Wam, while Season 2's theme song was Foxy Shazam's "Oh Lord," which also complements a tender moment between the title hero (John Cena) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) in the Peacemaker Season 2 finale.

Superman also boasts an eclectic soundtrack that sets it apart from the Man of Steel's other cinematic adventures. The most important track would have to be the last one heard in the 2025 film, "Punkrocker" by Teddybears, feat. Iggy Pop," which reflects how David Corenswet's Clark Kent boasts a brand of kindness that Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) dubs "the new punk rock."

Gunn may not be the writer or director of Supergirl, but the sight of Star-Lord's old-school headphones on Kara Zor-El's neck hints that, as long as he is running DC Studios with Peter Safran, music will always be an essential element of the DCU.
