After a string of disappointing box office results, Sydney Sweeney may have found her comeback with her new R-rated psychological thriller, The Housemaid. While her recent projects Christy, Eden, and Echo Valley struggled to gain traction, her latest film is getting a stronger response from both audiences and critics.
Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel. McFadden has become one of the most popular writers in the thriller genre, and early reviews suggest the movie version lives up to that reputation. The film currently holds a solid 78 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Housemaid (2025) Official Trailer – Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar
Also featuring Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins, the film has drawn a lot of unexpected praise. The official synopsis describes it this way:
“From director Paul Feig, The Housemaid plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Sklenar). But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous – a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.”
Set to open nationwide this Friday, December 19, the movie could mark the beginning of a larger series. McFadden has written two sequels, The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching, along with a short story titled The Housemaid’s Wedding. If the film performs well, there is more material ready to be adapted.
