The following contains major spoilers for Ultimate Endgame #1, on sale December 31 from Marvel Comics.

The beginning of the end of the Ultimate Universe has finally revealed what happened to its oldest heroes

In a preview of Ultimate Endgame #1 (by Deniz Camp, Terry & Rachel Dodson, Jonas Scharf, Federico Blee, Edgar Delgado, and VC's Cory Petit) from Marvel Comics, readers are brought back to the early days of the Maker's quest to remake the reality of Earth-6160 in his own image. Deep within the hidden city of Olympia, the Maker prepares to strike down Zuras, the leader of the Eternals. Worse still, the Maker has seen fit to destroy the Machine that would normally bring fallen Eternals back to life, leaving them no hope of salvation from their tragic fate.

The official solicit synopsos for Ultimate Endgame #1 from Marvel Comics reads, "Two (thousand) years have passed in the Ultimate Universe, but inside the City, the Maker has had thousands of years to prepare for his return! With the barrier around the City finally gone, heroes all across the Ultimate Universe must mobilize to defeat the Maker before it's game over. For everyone. Meanwhile, the rest of the world wages World War III..."

Although the Eternals didn't make their comic book debut until 1976's Eternals #1 by Jack Kirby, John Verpoorten, and Glynis Wein, their history in the Marvel Universe stretches back so far that it has been retconned to before even Marvel Comics' own titles. A near-immortal offshoot of humanity created by the Celestials, the Eternals have long fought against their twisted counterparts known as the Deviants.

Over the decades, the Eternals have long stood as some of the Marvel Universe's most powerful and esoteric heroes. Despite their overwhelming strength and incredible abilities, the Eternals have consistently struggled to establish the same sort of foothold as the likes of the Avengers, even after receiving the Marvel Cinematic Universe treatment back in 2021.

Ultimate Endgame #1 marks a major turning point for the current iteration of the Ultimate Universe, as its heroes are finally forced to once again face off against the villainous variant of Reed Richards known as the Maker. For the past two years, the Maker has been trapped within an inescapable prison, allowing heroes such as Tony Stark to call upon their allies and form an army that will hopefully prove capable of saving their world.

Writer Deniz Camp previously discussed the end of the Ultimate Universe, which he largely took over from original scribe Jonathan Hickman. "It's hard to talk about it without getting emotional. It really is the culmination of everything Jonathan began," Camp said back in October.

"Everything from my book and everyone else's book are all converging. It's gonna be definitive, it's going to be big. It's going to be emotional, there's going to be death... It's just wild."

Ultimate Endgame #1 goes on sale December 31 from Marvel Comics.
