Frank Castle, is that you?? One hell of a curveball is being tossed by Marvel, or rather a dozen of them, by way of their sensational What If … ? comic book series that recently spawned an animated adaptation for Disney+ but, to this point, nothing outlandishly imaginative had been done for The Punisher in the anthology.
Or, more accurately, not to this degree. The iconic street-level anti-hero is all the rage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle is a master class in casting, and now comes some spectacular storytelling with What if the Punisher had Magik’s Eldritch Armor?.

What a visual treat this is — seeing the brutal, vengeful mercenary donning armor that channel's Magik's demonic powers.
Ahead of the live-action one-shot, The Punisher: One Last Kill, and Bernthal’s debut in Peter Parker’s universe for Spider-Man: Brand New Day — also fresh off of his critical role in Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again — Castle’s installment in the What If … ? franchise is expected to obliterate canon in imaginative fashion, seeing as that’s the entire point of the anthology, anyway.
Marvel has pulled together an amazing cast of creatives to get the job done, as they noted in the most recent solicitation: "The current class of Marvel's Stormbreakers include Alessandro Cappuccio (Ultimate Wolverine), Netho Diaz (X-Men), Simone Di Meo (X-Men of Apocalypse), Juan Frigeri (Ultimates), Gurihiru (Jeff the Land Shark), Jonas Scharf (Ultimate Endgame), Geoff Shaw (Wade Wilson: Deadpool), and Luciano Vecchio (Uncanny X-Men).
“Chosen for their remarkable art, notable achievements, and boundless imagination when bringing the Marvel mythos to the page, these creators represent the future of comic book artistry and embody the raw talent to shatter the limits of visual storytelling!
What If ... ? Marvel Finally Buried DC?
It won't happen (sidebar: I'm happy to say that, seeing as I love both universes), but this year marks the 50th anniversary of What If …?, and it shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever — great news for Marvel fans who might’ve wondered if the end was approaching.
In truth, it feels as if it’s just getting started. With upcoming stories that reimagine familiar superheroes such as Daredevil as Hulk, Spider-Man as The Punisher, Rogue as the Sorcerer Supreme and Iron-Man as a symbiote, etc., the intensity is only going to continue ratcheting upward for Marvel and their fans in 2026.
"Also part of the 50th anniversary celebration are a series of all-new What If…? one-shots! Announced last month, the new one-shots shake the foundations of every corner of the Marvel mythos with startling shifts to iconic storylines, kicking off in June with What If…? Uncanny X-Men #1, where Gerry Duggan and Jan Bazaldua ask What if… Cyclops had stayed with Madelyne Pryor?, and What If…? Thor #1, where Torunn Grønbekk and Sergio Dávila ask What if… Thor Got Spider-Man's Symbiote Suit?’”
Hey, what if we all continued foaming at the mouth over such sensational content and what if Marvel continued to feed the hunger instead of focusing solely on the upcoming live-action movies and TV series? Thankfully, there’s no need to wonder, and May 2026 will feed generations.
