Uncanny X-Men #504-507 (2008-2009): Matt Fraction run begins

Colossus is mopey since Kitty doesn’t want him any more, so Emma Frost and Colossus tell him to buck up.

Of course this doesn’t work.  He’s still sad.  He goes to a Russian restaurant hoping the food will be comforting but meets up with a tattooed mutant who Colossus identifies as “the devil himself”.  He ends up joining the gang of criminals and then betraying them and bringing them to justice.

It doesn’t really go anywhere, but it gives Colossus a little spotlight time.  Through his adventure, he comes to term with losing Kitty and gets her name tattooed on his chest.

Meanwhile, Emma and Scott are having relationship issues of their own, and when Emma goes into her partner’s brain she finds a “locked box” that she can’t open.  Scott tells her that his ex, Jean Grey, taught him how to do that–and obviously Emma’s jealous of that.

It drives her to meet with Norman Osborn for a more prominent role in the role of mutantkind at the governmental level.

While that is happening, Cyclops is managing the new X-Men base in Marin County, which is becoming a refuge for de-powered mutants.  Real Estate is expensive in Marin.

Also: Madelyne Pryor is still alive and recruits Spiral and Lady Deathstrike to her cause, the “Sisterhood of Mutants.”

And speaking of recruiting, Dr. Nemesis, Madison Jeffries, and others get recruited by Angel and Beast to help with their research in reverse in M-Day as the news of a mutant birth gets out into the world.

At the very end, High Evolutionary uses Celestial technology to restore Magneto’s powers.

So…This “arc” is really a whole bunch of separate stories developing, tied together by the Colossus story.  It’s well written and interesting, and a good sign that the main X-title is in solid hands with this creative team.
