Filmmaker Zack Snyder is known for epics like 300 and Watchmen, and of course, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. His take on the iconic DC franchise has fans wondering if he will ever return to the DC Universe.
The acquisition of Warner Bros. by Netflix, may have just given fans of the SnyderVerse some hope about a potential revival. Despite the fact that Netflix has seemingly parted ways with Snyder as far as his original series and movies like the Army of the Dead franchise and Twilight of the Gods, there might still be a future for Snyder at the streamer.
After Snyder left DC after a family tragedy, Warner Bros. used his exit to steer the franchise in a different direction. Snyder was quickly snatched up by Netflix and signed a first-look deal with the streamer. However, recently the relationship between Netflix and Snyder has seemingly come to a screeching halt with the streamer quietly canceling plans for Snyder’s Army of the Dead sequels, like Planet of the Dead.
Netflix very recently acquired Warner Bros. Discovery in a huge deal, which likely puts the streamer in a great spot to take over DC ad potentially the SnyderVerse. Per Screen Rant, following the success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, a campaign was launched for SnyderVerse projects to start streaming on Netflix since the filmmaker already had a relationship with the streamer.
About four years after the success of the Snyder cut, Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery might just open the door for a SnyderVerse reboot. With the merger, comes some suggestions that there will be some huge projects coming in the near future, marking renewed hope for fans of the SnyderVerse.
According to Screen Rant, Snyder has “had a prolific relationship with Netflix over the last few years, and with the DC brand moving under the purview of Netflix, it is conceivable that some of the executives may think restoring the SnyderVerse could be profitable and deliver what a large and loyal fanbase is already begging for.”
With the merger, the DCU is expected to be a big priority at Netflix. Warner Bros. has already done some big-time investing in the brand with James Gunn and Peter Safran co-heading DC Studios.
Snyder to Collaborate with Army of the Dead Actor on Next Project
Snyder’s latest project, an action film tentatively titled Deviants, was recently announced. It’s described as a “hot lesbian action” movie and will feature Army of the Dead and Star Trek: Discovery star Tig Notaro in a leading role. Notaro first collaborated with Snyder in Army of the Dead and recalled her time working with the filmmaker.
"I really am always desperate to be able to connect with a director, other actors, and just be able to look at each other in moments, and acknowledge the ridiculousness that we might be in the middle of,” she said. "I felt like it was really going to need to happen on that particular movie, and so I think it was oddly similar,” Notaro said.
“I just needed that connection with people and Zack and the rest of his crew really gave that to me. Once I feel like I have that connection, I feel way more comfortable to do what it is that I'm being asked to do to the best of my ability. Hopefully, I make them happy with what I've done,” she added.
